Term 3

Whitebait Connections
Sophie had her final visit today and share the information that we discovered! We had lots to share!
Awaruku Stream
Gerontius Reserve

We have looked at a variety of ways that we can help the local streams. Here are a few ideas so far:

  • Connect to Facebook to tell more people
  • share our information on our See-Saw account
  • Looking after whitebait eggs - create a fence so people don't stand on the eggs.
  • Create signs for the streams
  • Create brochures with lots of information
  • Create posters for the local community
  • Move the storm water drains
  • Sell cupcakes to raise
  • Getting the council to help out - raising $ to protect our streams
  • Not water cars near drains
  • Plant trees and shrubs
  • Tell people about the check, clean and dry method
  • Put something into the newspaper
  • Create a community group to clean up the local streams
  • Join a group to protect whitebait

Inquiry
We are having so much fun exploring our inquiry this term. Here are a few acrostic poems about our native animal:

Morepork
Maori   name is the Ruru

GIANT  WETA
Ground crawling creeping brown creature on the forest floor. The Tree Weta - Hemideina thoracica (Male) | Jérôme Albre | Flickr
I have six long creeping legs and long threaded antenna.
A weta has wiry antenna and a big strong body.
Not mostly eats meat but is a vegetarian.
The giant weta has back legs with sharp spikes.

Weta is also in maori is the name for a group of insects.
Eat different food.
They can be nocturnal and mainly feed at night.
A giant night crawler that creeps on the soil and sneaks up to it’s prey.

Morepork - by Kimiora

More than one owl out at night lurking for their prey
Owls soaring through the magnificent night sky.
Razor sharp teeth sink into prey.
Eating day after day their delicious prey.
People hunt  our owls but not able to find them as they are nocturnal.
Our owls suffer because people hunt them.
Ruru glide through the amazing, wonderful sky.
Kai is the prey they eat as their babys slurp up yummy nummy kai.

RURU

Razor sharp talons that looks like hooks on a stupendous coat hanger
Unusual call in the night soaring past the moon
Rolling their claws round its prey squawking like a kārearea
Unique feathers blowing in the wind

What does our inquiry need?
Here are a few things we have thought about:

  • Appearance - what do they look like - include pictures, diagrams, drawings and writing
  • Describe the habitat
  • Some pictures with labels
  • 5 interesting facts that are true
  • Make it appealing to the audience
  • Answer our key questions

How can we present our findings ?
Here are a few ideas:
Made with Padlet

Mandarin
Mandarin Lesson today - Jianzhi (剪紙), is a traditional style of papercutting in China and it originated from cutting patterns for rich Chinese embroideries and later developed into a folk art in itself. Jianzhi has a number of distinct uses in Chinese culture, almost all of which are for health, prosperity or decorative purposes. Red is the most commonly used color. Jianzhi cuttings often have a heavy emphasis on Chinese characters symbolizing the Chinese zodiac animals.

Art - Ruru
Check them out on our see-saw account OR in the staffroom! They look incredible with charcoal!

Visiting the Local Streams with Wai Care

Awesome trip visiting two different streams (Awariku Reserve and Gerontius Glade )

Very interesting talking to Sophie from Wai Care about water clarity, PH levels and finding creatures! Lots of fun - check out their see-saw for more information. Now we need to think about our social action?

Maths Week
Visit maths weeks to find out more ! Check out Mathletics too!

Today we had money word problems to solve. Heaps of discussion and collaborative learning - making sure we listened to others and valued their opinions too!

Wai Care

Today we had a special visit in the class visiting - Sophie from WAI CARE. Did you know that there is only ..

What are some water habitat?

Wetlands - New Zealand has only got 10% left of our Wetlands on NZ. There are a big filter for our rivers and lakes. Pupeko's love Wetlands! In Australia they are known as a Swamp hen. Mudfish are very special to NZ - as they only live in NZ. They are very special because they can breathe out of water! They can do this for 6 months! They breathe through their skin

Lakes - What makes a lake a lake? Here we can find our freshwater crayfish (Kōura)

Streams and Creek habitats - We have a lot of these around our houses.

Rivers - this is way fish can travel - these are their motorways.

How do we tell if our local waterway is healthy?

  • no rubbish
  • waterway - fast flowing
  • plants and trees - vegetation
Our 5 Whitebait Species

  • shortjaw kokopu (has a short jaw)koaroImage result for shortjaw kokopu
  • banded kokopu (has bands across their body)Image result for banded kokopu
  • giant kokopu (they are bigger than the other ones)Image result for giant kokopu
  • koaro - golden and speckledImage result for koaro
These are threatened!

The life cycle of a freshwater whitebait:

What happens when we pollute our waterways? What will happen to our threatened whitebait and other native fish? What can we do to protect our waterway?

  • Plant trees
  • Call DOC - department of Conversation - Pollution hotline
  • Look at where our karp are living - what are they doing to our water?
  • Keep oil, paint, rubbish away
  • Wash the 'rock snot' off our bodies

Great Poem this week everyone!
Thanks for sharing.

What is red?Red, Fox - Free images on Pixabay
A fox is red.
In it’s cosy bed.
One day a hunter came along while the fox sleeping.
He stabbed a knife in his tummy and ate him for a meal in bed.

What is brown?

What is brown? My hair is brown curling all the way down to town.

What is blue?

What is blue? A pen is blue stuck in the blue glue.

What is white?

What is white? Paper is white, Swishing in the light, that is very bright. To me paper is the whitest in sight, shining in the night. What we use to write. What paper does not like. I guess paper likes flying a kite. What is green? A bean is green. Tall, thin and lean, mostly clean. Not the least bit mean! What is brown? A poo is brown, in it’s pooey town. You see poo people walking down the lane and being poo clowns!

  • What is blue?
  • What is blue?
  • The sky is blue where the clouds float through.

  • What is red?
  • A fire truck is red and the boss is Jed.
  • What is green?
  • Paint is green on a big baked bean.
  • What is yellow?
  • Pears are yellow when they are mellow.
  • What is violet?
  • Clouds are violet in the summer twilight
  • What is orange?
  • Why an orange?
  • Just an orange.
Nick

What is Blue?

What is Blue? A dyed sheep is blue, it’s poop is too. It’s poop feels like blue glue. It has something to chew, which is it’s blue, glue, poo. Next door, the grumpy cow started to moo, because of the sheep’s evil poop that the sheep tried to chew, and chew, and chew, until it felt blue. So it scattered to the loo, with the evil poo. Ew! You are lucky that that the person who was there was not you! Double ew! There was something splattered on the floor, which was blue, glue poo! What are we going to do!? Oh, now i see blue, poo, glue spew, too! Ew, Ew, Ew! I hate poo! Now he is eating his ew, blue, poop, glue, spew. Ew! And he told me that in half an hour, his poo stew will be due!
